Our Election Symbol – The Broom

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entered Indian politics in 2012 and was officially allotted its election symbol, the broom, by the Election Commission of India on 1st August 2013. After submitting its most preferred symbols—broom, candle, and tap—the party was granted its first choice: the broom. (Source)

Significance of the Broom

The broom is more than just an election symbol; it represents the dignity of labour and the party’s promise to clean up India’s political system.

A statement issued by the party at the time said:

“With the broom, which symbolises dignity of labour, the party hopes to clean the filth which has permeated our government and our legislature. The country needs a clean sweep of its corrupted mainstream political parties.”

This symbol embodies AAP’s commitment to:

  • Fighting corruption
  • Ending criminalisation in politics
  • Promoting transparent governance
  • Uplifting social justice and public welfare

Launch of the Broom

The broom was officially launched on 3rd August 2013 by Arvind Kejriwal at the Valmiki Complex, New Delhi. This residential colony is home to thousands of sweepers working for the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

While addressing the gathering, Kejriwal said:

“We are starting our journey from this holy ground, and I am hopeful with this broom we will be able to cleanse society. With this, the cleansing of the nation and its politics has begun.”

Symbol of Our Core Promise

For party volunteers and supporters, the broom represents:

  • Cleaning corruption from politics
  • Removing communalism and divisive practices
  • Ensuring accountability and integrity in governance

Over the years, the broom has become one of the most widely recognised political symbols in India, inspiring citizens and volunteers to rally behind the party’s vision of a clean, accountable, and just political system.
